Abstract
The South China Sea represents one of the most significant geopolitical arenas in the contemporary international system due to its vital strategic location linking the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It also possesses substantial natural resources, including considerable reserves of oil and gas, in addition to being a major route for global trade, through which a large proportion of international maritime transportation passes. These characteristics have led to an escalation of regional and international competition over the region. China stands as the primary actor in this competition, facing several Southeast Asian states such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei, amid overlapping sovereignty claims over islands and maritime zones, particularly the Spratly and Paracel Islands.
The complexity of this competition has increased with the growing role of the United States in the region within the framework of the “Rebalance to Asia” strategy, which aims to limit Chinese influence and ensure freedom of navigation in this vital maritime corridor. As a result, the South China Sea has become an arena for strategic interaction between major powers and regional actors. Regional organizations, most notably the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), also attempt to manage disputes through diplomatic and legal frameworks, although their ability to contain escalation remains limited.
Regarding future prospects, strategic competition in the region is likely to persist through a combination of military deterrence and diplomatic negotiations, with the possibility of emerging new security arrangements that reflect shifts in the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific region. In this context, the South China Sea will continue to constitute a central arena of geopolitical rivalry and competition for influence in the international system in the coming decades.
