Kiasu and the Political Rights of Minorities in Singapore

Abstract

Abstract

Minorities exist in most countries around the world, and each minority possesses specific elements that qualify it for political rights, including the right to participate in political affairs, the right to belong to political parties, the right to run for Nominate and vote, and all other rights that can contribute to enhancing minority political participation.

The phenomenon of kiasu in Singapore is one of the most significant issues affecting the political rights of minorities in terms of participation in electoral processes, involvement in minority parties, or holding senior positions in the state. This phenomenon, which involves fear of losing to other parties, has hindered the participation of minority citizens and parties in state administration, policy formulation, and decision-making. This has led to the concentration of power in the hands of the majority, which represents Singaporeans of Chinese origin.
