Abstract
This study examines the role of international organizations in peacebuilding in South Sudan amid persistent internal conflicts and the fragility of state institutions following independence in 2011. It aims to assess the effectiveness of interventions by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the African Union, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), as well as humanitarian organizations, in supporting peace processes and reducing violence. The study is based on the assumption that international intervention was necessary and achieved partial successes, particularly in protecting civilians, alleviating humanitarian suffering, and sustaining the political process. However, these efforts have not resulted in sustainable peace due to deep-rooted internal structural factors, most notably weak governance and ethnic and political divisions, in addition to external challenges related to competing agendas among international and regional actors and the limited availability of enforcement mechanisms. Adopting a descriptive–analytical and comparative approach, the study concludes that sustainable peace in South Sudan requires a comprehensive framework that addresses the root causes of conflict, strengthens national ownership, and links peacebuilding efforts to institutional reform and transitional justice
